The Guangzhou Scorpions was founded in May 2010 by club Patron Grant “Tom” Dooley a living legend within the Asian football scene and a group of local expatriates who had a keen interest in the game of Australian Rules Football. From the outset The Scorpions intent was to spread the word about the ‘most exciting game in the world”. So far, they have done this with some success as the majority of the team hail from places other than Australia. With Guangzhou the center of the AFL’s plans to expand the game into China The Scorpions have also attracted a number of local Chinese athletes. Whether you already love the game or are just finding out about Australian Rules Football, The Guangzhou Scorpions will be able to help you learn and play the game.

With the generous support of some local businesses The Scorpions kitted themselves out with all the necessary equipment (jersey, balls and beer). Training occasionally and drinking regularly they prepared for their first game against another new comer to the Asian footy scene The Macau Lightening. Played under a blazing sun and 40oC temperatures this was a great game that had everything required of an Aussie rules match; with plenty of marks, scoring the occasional spot of “biffo” and a drop or two of “claret” all washed down with snags and beer. This almost perfect day was completed when The Scorpions managed to win their inaugural game by the narrowest of margins.
The next match for The Scorpions was to take on the might of Hong Kong in December 2010. A match again played under near perfect conditions showed that perhaps there had been too much drinking and not enough training for The Scorpions as they were soundly beaten by the much younger, fitter but not as handsome boys from Hong Kong.
In the post match festivities it was decided that the encounter should become a regular event and the South China Football League (SCAFL) was born and regular games were scheduled between Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou.
Beyond the activities within the SCAFL; The Guangzhou Scorpions are trying to raise the profile of Australian Rules Football in China through the promotion of the game to the extensive Chinese student population at local universities and schools. An Auskick program was started in 2011 aimed at introducing the game to younger school children and a football development program is planned with local universities. These activities will raise the awareness of Australian Rules Football, as well as help to grow the links between the Chinese and expatriate communities within Guangzhou.
The Guangzhou Scorpions are extremely grateful to the support that they have been given and would particularly like to mention their sponsors who’s support has made everything possible.
